Hi All,
   I think there should be a lot of Japanese bitcoin users as Mtgox.com itself is in Japan. But still the concern for bitcoin in Japan is very little. But I think Japan should be a huge market for bitcoin. Because Japanese people love online shopping and online gambling and what not? I think there is not enough Japanese website to educate Japanese people about bitcoin.
   I am actually working as a translator and a coordinator on the Japanese translation of http://bitcoin.org in http://www.transifex.com.
   I will appreciate if other Japanese forum users gather here and raise their voice. We can also think and discuss about other opportunities in Japan.

Mt Gox being in Japan doesn't have anything to do with Japanese people using Bitcoin.

Sure it makes it easier for Japanese people to put money in and take it out, but Japanese culture in regards to money is a much bigger factor.

Japan is still a cash-based economy. People don't use credits cards. Opposite that, however, they already have a extensive network of digital money NFC systems (suica, pasmo, etc) that is extremely easy to use and secure (in fact, much easier than bitcoin for POS transactions!)

The main reasons Bitcoin is not big in Japan is the lack of need: there is no fear of government taking people's monies, no fear of loss due to physical theft, no need to send money globally, and no lack of an easy digital payment system.

@keatonatron,
       You are right the main reason is the current lack of need because Japanese people put trust on their systems. And Japanese people also don't bother to give a huge percentage to anybody who give them good service. But this culture can be and should be changed for many reasons.
       A very big reason can be make transactions with very less fee.
       Another reason is to stay in the global race. The way Bitcoin is rising, I think Japan will lag behind in the long run and I think that's not good for Japan.
       But still won't it be a great thing if people in Japan start using bitcoin? Some one need to educate them. Smiley

Of course! Japan definitely needs to change, and I want to help change things! I was just explaining the current situation. First we must understand why it is not very popular, then we can try to change it!

About buybitcoinbycreditcard.  I've noticed the fee is 1,500 yen per bitcoin. That's over 10%! I can't agree with such a ripoff. We can't tell people bitcoin is great because there are no fees when it costs them 10% in fees just to buy in!

@keatonatron,
       That's why I think they need "EDUCATION" about bitcoin. Countries where people adopted it early, they know where to trust, where not to,how to deal with and how to debunk. So,bitcoin can be used knowing nothing about it. But I think in Japan, we can not encourage Japanese people by only saying that bitcoin is a new techy currency that offers low fees. Rather we will have to make them understand about how the whole currency based crazy,greedy, central monetary system emerged not even before 100 years, how bitcoin and gold virtually are the same and how beautiful it would be to have a decentralized, global currency and how great it is to depend on mathematical logic and algorithms, not on biased human decisions.
        And I think, Japanese population are risk averse, but on the other hand they take things seriously if something has value, they love to trust and when they do so, they don't abandon. So the question why they did not adopt bitcoin is just not only that they did not need it, but also they haven't been properly informed or educated about the philosophy of bitcoin.

I agree. The whole world needs more education about bitcoin  Wink
But Japan is often uneducated about things that come from overseas, so they need it the most!
