Italian and British police are urgently investigating whether they caught the wrong person in a much-hyped anti-smuggling operation said to have netted one of the world’s most-wanted people smugglers.

Investigators in both countries announced with great fanfare on Wednesday morning that they had seized Medhanie Yehdego Mered, a 35-year-old Eritrean whom an Italian prosecutor called “the boss of one of the most important criminal groups operating in central Africa and Libya”.

Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA), which was involved in the investigation, hailed the capture of “one of the world’s most-wanted people smugglers”, following his extradition on Wednesday to Italy from Sudan, where he had been arrested.

Of course they caught the wrong person. It's called "safety theater". Look it up. It's a recurring theme with the war on drugs and the military industrial complex

Yep, that's not him. There's another article which is called "Smuggler's victims say police have arrested innocent refugee". They always arrest the wrong guy and tell to the world they have arrested the right one. Happened many times before.

They made really big new about it, that they finally caught main boss in this criminal group and one of the world’s most-wanted people smugglers Smiley
If they caught wrong man, it's really big mistake and scandal and someone should be responsible for it.
Also, in this case, innocent man is in the prison, his reputation and life is ruined and police is responsible for it.
If he find good lawyer, I'm sure that he will get a lot money.

Mistakes are made, of course everyone wants to catch these gangleaders but kidnapping the wrong person in a foreign country then renditioning them out of the country is pretty damn dirty too. I wonder how many special forces, police and other interested parties were wasted on this - let's hope it turns out they caught the right guy, as his family would want him out of prison regardless.

I have a feeling they did the same thing for Bin Laden. I know for certain that CNN announced Saddam Hussein's capture multiple times. The media just pretends like it never happened, and so do we :/

Quote
Man sent to Italy is refugee Medhanie Tesfamariam Berhe, not smuggler Medhanie Yehdego Mered, detainee’s friends say...

Before the police do propagande that found a great criminal had to be confirmed if it really was or not the wanted criminal.

Now the real criminal goes into hiding better and the poor man who was arrested unfairly got dirty reputation.

This isn't the first time, nor the last, that the police is making a mistake. Actually, to the man who was wrongly accused, I think this is a huge chance. Now many people will look at him with sympathy. He will have opportunities that he wouldn't have if he had remained unknown.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.

Yes of course this is not the first one there are many more occurrences of false arrest of the kepolisi that are not revealed by the media, I think it's too bad police information obtained to the detriment of innocent parties as in this case.
