My mother in law bought some coins a couple years back. She forgot to back them up to an offline key. I know a little about bitcoin but have had no success in getting them to a new wallet. The issue is that the coins won't verify until qt syncs and it continually gives an error before it finishes and crashes the program. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance and sorry if I missed a sticky on this

You can export the private keys before the sync is complete, these are two options to check out.  HOWEVER, before you do anything, make a backup or two of the wallet.dat file to be safe:

You might also want to try to a clean install of Bitcoin core.
If it keeps crashing there might mean something's corrupted.

like cr1776 said, the most important thing is to make sure your wallet.dat is backed up so you don't lose your keys.
You can also try blockchain.info to import the wallet, but I don't suggest leaving the coins there for long.

I think that exporting the private key is the best thing to do in this case

Had the same problem a few months ago.
I exported the private keys as cr1776 explained and it worked.
