I wonder if I am bordering PPD (paranoid personality disorder) but I am extremely afraid of moving my wallet to my laptop and installing a client.
I have recently installed Kaspersky Pure 2.0 I ran it through my hard drive and yet, I am not sure if my laptop is truly free of keyloggers or trojans. The worst thing is that the worst thing can still be happening and no antivirus will ever detect a newly crypted malware... with the latest whatever plugin exploit
I wonder how you guys are dealing with this stress. I never really cared when my laptop was just a laptop. Hell, I never really cared if I actually had a keylogger or any other malware (my record so far is that I dodged every single attempt, though).
I never really cared about people snooping around, mainly because it was someone just trolling. (and all my serious accounts had TOTP, so I don't care, etc...). The worst thing that could happen was someone stealing my CD Key (hypothetical cd key, I never owned one, lol)
Monetizable? maybe, useless? most definitely. The only thing I really cared was someone stealing cpu time by belonging a botnet, but that was more like a threat to my pride rather than to my pockets.
I freaking miss those days actually, when data was just that, data.
But now data is literally money, and I have to actually pay attention of all the potential attack vectors to my fucking personal computer.
The game has changed so much. It is scary how it is becoming reality what lazy writers and bad movie directors from the 80's envisioned about the future: hackers stealing money from each other from their computers and "progress" bars when making transactions from an account to another.
I am sorry guys but I am still freaking out: data is literally money!
I expect you guys to recommend me to use strongcoin or any other offline wallet, but still... it is irrational but I am afraid of decrypting my wallet and importing it to an unofficial client. What if... what if... what if... *fetal position under the shower* what if... lol
Nuke the drive, download/buy an authorized copy of your favorite operating system and stay clean.
If you can't afford a dedicated laptop, use a dedicated drive, which you boot from and is disconnected if not used.
