I would like to start mining. Should I get an Avalon asic or BFL asic? Or should I start out with GPUs?

Get started with a used GPU and hash away. If you like the concept and are comfortable with the costs involved maintaining a mining rig, then invest into the ASICs when the third batch of pre orders are available from Avalon.
