How does a mint make raised numbers?

I've asked around on the CCC slack chat, to no avail. I've seen many numbered coins (e.g. Genesis Series 2) go out, and I dunno how the numbers are made raised?

1. Please don't tell me they make a new mould for every number!
2. I highly doubt they're soldered on
3. Some people say 3D printed, but wouldn't a 3d printer leave faint lines across the surface?

For my coins, they are engraved. Dont know about other makers but i assume that would be the choice way to do serial numbers or any other unique property to a single coin

From the pictures i've seen, the numbers don't look raised. They look like they are engraved with a laser.

The numbers are usually engraved. Making them raised would require to make separate moulds for each coin. I don't know who told you that the numbers are 3D printed but you should stop speaking with them .

There are coin engraving machines out there readily available so most likely those coins have only 1 mold and after that they engrave a number on each coin or they can also use striking method but that's dangerous because it may have an effect on the numbers ending up not properly aligned.

Oops, didn't realise that my coin did in fact have engraved numbers. My mistake then. But just to clarify, if there were a coin out there which were numbered and the numbers were raised, they would have to be made with different moulds for each?

It would very well seem so. I cannot think of another legit way numbers could be raised on a coin, apart from having a completely new mould made for each coin - which would be ridiculously cost prohibitive.

Edit: I personally don't recall ever seeing a coin with different raised characters on the same series of coins - if that makes any precoffee sense.

Couldn't they use a milling machine?
Add some extra raised metal at moulding stage then mill it off.
It will have to be done for each coin separately.

A lot of coins have raised lettering. Its done with a press and die set. Steel dies are made with the design of the coin, and silver blanks are struck using a hydraulic press. It takes something like 3 tons of force to press a 1 oz silver round.
