so i've been reading up about things before my time, mainly the alt madness that went along with the bitcoin madness in late 2013.

considering how much money was lost when they all crashed, did you think that was it for alts or did you expect more?

the thing that really gets me is that incredible amounts of money were being made recently in alts when bitcoin was bascially doing nothing. do you think this is gonna continue or are we due another giant bubble pop?

There's always something going on.  There will always be peaks and troughs in the cryptocurrency economy.  I know a lot of people think of all this as nothing but scams left and right.  But let's face it, it has a life of it's own now.  There's money coming in and out, and the banking world got their heads turned in this direction right now thinking what and how they could use and make money out of all this.

The thing is, though, the cryptocurrency scene is very dynamic.  One day a platform is the world's savior, the next day it's hacked and exposed as nothing but another failed attempt to create the Bitcoin killer.

I got into alts because I wanted a slice of all the cash the eth miners were making at the start of the year.  I was mining btc but just not making enough cash, so I started mining eth.

What amazes me is how much the banks have come on board.  Just look at the market cap on ethereum.  That is not just forum users.

More than half of this forum is bitcoin chatter, the rest is altcoin chatter and only a small percentage of that are Ethereum threads.  Although https://forum.ethereum.org can get busy, no way does that site alone represent the full size of the market.
I assume the source of all this money is from The R3 Consortium  (I.E.  Barclays, BBVA, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Royal Bank of Scotland, State Street, UBS, Bank of America, BNY Mellon, Citi, Commerzbank, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Morgan Stanley, National Australia Bank, Royal Bank of Canada, Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken, Société Générale, Toronto-Dominion Bank,  Mizuho Bank, Nordea, UniCredit,  BNP Paribas, Wells Fargo, ING, Macquarie Group, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce,  BMO Financial Group, Danske Bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, Natixis, Nomura, Northern Trust, OP Financial Group, Banco Santander, Scotiabank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, U.S. Bancorp, Westpac Banking Corporation, SBI Holdings of Japan, Hana Financial of South Korea, Bank Itau of Brazil and Toyota Financial Services.)

So it will not die, nor will they jump ship onto another coin.  When it goes PoS in 6 months they will own it and there will be no miners just 250 validators.  And who will those validators be? R3?

They won't be worried about users because ethereum will be retro fitted to the back end of the current banking system.  It's sole purpose is to make 50% of of back office staff redundant in the world of banking, and the people mining and posting here will have facilitated it all.

All you can hope for is to ride the coat tails to make a little profit on the way.

As for the other alts...  Well they will just be hobby coins come 2017.

Sad but thats how i see it.

I also missed out on the 2013 side of bitcoin and alts so this is actually news to me but i don't think we will lose alt coins anytime soon.  Eventually one of them at least will put bitcoin in its place and be crowned the new no 1. Either that or im going to lose loads of money =p

how do you foresee that happening? all the alt action that's taken place since 2013 makes bitcoin look ever more boring and so it's even more trusted than before compared to stuff like the eth shitshow.

you can still make plenty of money even if something doesn't take over.

The market is not a monopoly. So that this could have been foreseen.
The question is, how to analyze it? Do not buy it all in a row, for the sake of possible profit.

Look what eth nearly did to the community.  There was so much money taken out of bitcoin and put into eth and a whole army of eth fanboys appeared out of thin air.  Had it not turned into a complete fuck up of a coin then who knows what could have happened.  Something that appeals to the masses or just the bitcoin community due to in fighting will appear sooner or later.

Id rather it didn't since majority of my holdings are in btc.  But which this space.

The vast, vast majority of altcoins are total garbage and should not exist.  I don't know the reasons behind the resurgence, aside from blind greed, but I strongly suspect most of them are headed toward zero.  Except for the top ones:  Dash, Doge, LTC, ETH, and a couple of others that have good support.

so i've been reading up about things before my time, mainly the alt madness that went along with the bitcoin madness in late 2013.

considering how much money was lost when they all crashed, did you think that was it for alts or did you expect more?

The latter, although it was essentially a gut feeling. Why: I concluded that blockchain technology had attained critical mass, which meant that Bitcoin and the other would come back.

considering how much money was lost when they all crashed, did you think that was it for alts or did you expect more?

The latter, although it was essentially a gut felling. Why: I concluded that blockchain technology had attained critical mass, which meant that Bitcoin and the other would come back.

I had the same appraisal. I did expect a giant exhale (even back at $700 - $1000 on the way down), which we did get down to $150 for Bitcoin. (I expected it to potentially bottom lower perhaps $50)

Right now I expect something really big to happen in CC soon (well we already had Ethereum this year so I expect more like that and much bigger). Perhaps within the next 6 months to a year. Not just any specific project in my mind as a possibility, but I mean I think we have reached critical mass of ideas and now we are just waiting for some project(s) to put it all together.

We also have a potential collapse of the global economy 2017 - 2020, so this could perhaps cause some short-term selloff (but this isn't certain also), but I don't think anything will stop the coming juggernaut of blockchains.

You want to be getting yourself aligned in CC/blockchains to become a $multi-millionaire if you aren't already.

And if you are already a millionaire and don't have a significant postion in CC/blockchains, then you need to start dollar cost averaging in asap.

Edit: some others (e.g. smooth at least in past and to some extent also myself) would have argued that it was very unclear if CC/blockchains could become anything more than an experiment. However, I think I see now that it is impossible that CC/blockchains doesn't disrupt the existing systems, regardless of whether we don't attain the nirvana of perfect decentralization and trustless attributes. Because at the worst, CC/blockchains enables many more degrees-of-freedom in how to attack issues of governance, payments, finance, capital formation, etc.. It is just blowing my mind! Great time to be involved (sucks though to be ill and not be able to go full blast).

there will be more wave in the past, people like to invest in alt, everyone who was thinking that the alt scene was done in 2014 after the big crash, was just fooling himself

it was because, at that time bitcoin crashed, and destroyed the good sentiment, now again it's rising and everyone is injecting new money on the alt world

seeing how i'm expecting another rise for bitcoin, this thing is not going to end now, so no crash will happen this time

I thought we got burned enough with the 'crypto asset' craze that people wouldn't invest into IPO style crypto investments anymore. Everything from that era went belly up, NEOBEE, RENT, ASICMINER. But I was wrong, people went full retard with the Ethereum thing. We are apparently still greedy, so not too much changed. This is just everything rounding the corner again. We

I mined 1.30 ltc and hoarded for the year of 2014-2015 ..LTC that is...just due to being p/o'd about the whole thing...it either was gonna work or I was gonna
go down with it.

Moved most of it to BTC 2015-2016 ...still mining Titans in 2016 ..who'd a thunk it...

so say 10 years from now I will say it was all a 'brilliant plan' on my part..but it was mostly due to luck Smiley

Only think I foresaw is that scrypt difficulty on LTC or 'something' would likely let me play with the Titans a bit longer. I had a Neptune pre-order and swapped it for a Titan
(for 2014 I thought that was quite dumb other option was a full refund) ....but I did 'foresee' the Neptunes getting eaten alive by difficulty...so at least that I did foresee or guess
correctly about that ..why I jumped camp to the Titans

the rest Titan wise again was being stubborn and mining and holding at the low LTC price and just luck..and on some recovery over 3.50 ltc moved it to btc mostly

Again I reserve the right to claim 'brilliance' in the future ...say about 10 years....when BTC hits 10k and LTC hits 1k don't ya know Smiley

But man crypto anything you look around ...find yourself with choices...and  truth be told if you narrow choices down to two is usually about as far as I can pare it down Sad

buy/sell...mine/don't mine.... buy equip/don't buy equip.... trust a pre-order/don't trust a pre-order....trade sell/trade buy....the list is endless...

it seems since 2013 from my point a view.....just flipping a coin would have been just a good a choice maker and probably involved a lot less 'angst' etc

I don't see this changing anytime soon either (say next 5 years of turmoil)

so i've been reading up about things before my time, mainly the alt madness that went along with the bitcoin madness in late 2013.

considering how much money was lost when they all crashed, did you think that was it for alts or did you expect more?

I agree, 2017 will be the break through year for crypto, but my crystal ball is still cloudy as to which application it'll be. Could be something related to torrents, or maybe one of the social networking apps like STEEM or Synereo, other candidates might be gaming, gambling or porn. I think if you relaunched STEEM with PORN instead of blogs, then *maybe* crypto would break into the mainstream consciousness. There's enough money & smart people around now, and Bitcoin is 'known' now, so we're past the Napster stage IMO. It is a great time to be involved with crypto and have some level of 'experience' in the cryptosphere!
