After not accessing my Bitcoin Wallet on a rarely used computer for a couple of years, I did so about a month ago. I received the subject message and that the synchronization with the network was 1 year and 48 weeks behind. I Googled and searched, tried many possible solutions; it actually started processing at one point, but quit after about a week's worth of transactions. Today I decided to reset Bitcoin Core and changed my router's security level to low. Port 8333 is forwarded to the IP address of that computer. Restarted and without changing anything, synchronization began. It's now down to 1 year 24 weeks behind with 8 nodes/services connected (first I've seen of any connections).

Well, big sigh of relief ... hoping this may be of assistance to someone else with this problem.

You shouldn't need to open port 8333 unless you want that device to be a full node, so I'd close that port again and increase your router's security level to prevent any network intrusions. Are you running the latest version of Bitcoin Core? If I remember right, some of the old versions of Bitcoin Core can't sync with the network anymore. That could be what's causing your issue, especially when you mention that you've rarely used that computer for a couple of years now. Plus, the newer versions of Bitcoin Core sync much faster than the older versions, and offer pruning as well (reducing the storage requirements for running Bitcoin Core).

"Reset Bitcoin core"?  What version were/are you running?

That has got to be the issue.  Keep everything on your computer as is and download the new bitcoin core.  Let it sync and then place your wallet.dat file in the data folder for the new bitcoin core.  That should be a faster, cleaner sync and then your data will be imported.  Or you can manually import, but that can be confusing based on the wallet that you are using.  Not really hard to do, just an option that is not on every wallet and not in the same place sometimes.  Start by clicking the menus, beginning with "File" and look for import.
