Hi, can anybody help me when it comes to running a node for profit? I have VPS's at my disposal and am looking to join programs of altcoins to make profit. I heard I need an investment of the altcoin first to become a node however I didn't see any hardware requirements or anything to help choose your altcoin. Is there any quick tutorials around?

running a node will not give you any money to make profit or not!
here is what i know
- with a VPS you can not mine anything
- running a bitcoin Node or other altcoins like bitcoin also won't give you any money you will only help the network of that this way.
- there are a couple of coins that give you rewards for "staking" and i think this is what you have heard. you have to have some balance on your altcoin wallet and keep the wallet -as a full node- running to receive the reward. but this may not really be worth it depending on how much your are spending for your VPS

No. For just running a node you usually do not need any stake of the coin. If you want to mine/harvest/force/... coins then you need more or less coins depending on the proof-of concept.
There are many tutorial available for the corresponding projects. Just choose one project you want to run a node for an search for setting up an VPS.

Bitcoin doesn't work that way. You may be thinking of Dash. If you have 1000 Dash, you can run a Dash master node and earn income.

Setup a Node shop like
https://bitnodes.net/services/

Charged a monthly or yearly fee.
Hardware requirements will vary per coin.

Or if you are looking into just being a masternode for DASH, you do have to buy DASH,
https://www.dash.org/masternodes2/
