global market for the "Use" of Bitcoins

Have been trying to explain the concept of Bitcoins to some of my family members.  This is a typical question I get from them.  How would you answer it?

"I am curious relative to the global market for the "Use" of Bitcoins and Litecoins.  What major players take this as a form of currency?  Is there a dynamic market for the use of these cyber currencies aside from the speculative market that the "mining" community embraces?  Interestingly, as it relates to this activity, I am not sure those are even the right questions.  It just occurs to me there needs be a strong "use side" for these cyber currencies to maintain a market that is less than highly speculative."
