Personally I don't think that bitcoin has any serious competitors yet, but obviously a lot of them have better technology. However the technology isn't the most important - i think it is the business model. Most altcoins are benefiting the founder, while bitcoin really isn't.

Probably Monero is the closest, but still pretty far.

If you want to earn fast and risk while doing so then focus on flavour of the month ICO. If you want to invest your money wisely then pick bitcoin and hold.
I won't waste my time with countless shitty alts and lose mi mid because of the drama surrounding them.

I recommend you just go with bitcoin mate. If you are going with altcoin then try some legitimate ICOs, that will profit you the most out of all investments. Picking the pump and dump is getting harder and harder by the day, I wouldn't recommend doing it.

The closest competitor right now is obviously Ethereum, but the price is dying. Bitcoin is more consistent with its returns.

Nothing is better than bitcoin, i had invest in various alt coin and this year the volatility of alt coin is really unstable, so i dont really can suggest any alt coin for now, the one that show great promises is only monero, but lately the price also dropping, so better hold to bitcoin for now

In terms of functionality,Monero and doge may have a chance that if bitcoin just magically disappears or core devs start centralizing it.In terms of investment, nothing, not even close to the statistics bitcoin has shown over the years. You can invest in the ICO's and profit after they launch,if the coin is not dumped by the scammers.

I think do not select ETH for now, many rumors spread about the bad things ETH and also the price is still not stable, try to chose top 13 in http://coinmarketcap.com/
