Trying to get started - Mac Bitcoin QT sync issue

I've read several thread with people having a similar issue, but none resolved my issue.

I'm on Mac OSX 10.8.3.  Using Bitcoin QT v0.8.1-beta.  I'm trying to do the initial sync, but am stuck at 154157 blocks for the last several days.  I've tried deleting the app nd restarting with no change.  I tried searching for a possible corrupt databas, but there is nothing Bitcoin related in my ~/library/application support.  This is where the other threads have pointed people... I have nothing there.  Any ideas?

I'm trying to get started with a wallet and mining, just to see things for myself.
