Anybody else run into issues w\ 7950s running hot? I bought 3 of these : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150590 from newegg. They arrived and when I was unboxing I noticed one of the cards' box was black as opposed to the standards brown cardboard. This card also shows slightly different specs under GPUZ and jumps past 90c immediately after it's put under load.

I don't have that exact card - but different brand with same design. They all run hot for me as well, which figures with the design and tiny single fan. I just put them in the coolest spots my rigs have and don't push them as hard as I do others.

I know it is a steep idea but can you not take off the cover, and blast the cards with a couple of 120 mm fans?

Agreed, I had so many xfx fan replacements sent out, I ended up just using a 120mm fan strapped to my old 5830 at the time, yateloon. IMO, they should stop bundling games with cards and start dedicating the funds to the fans.

XFX has failed cooling 101 with their GCN cards. The older ones were decent.

People, it's not a problem with the cards or the coolers, or their fans.
I recently got an XFX 7970 with double fans and had the same problems. I removed the heatsink and applied a high quality thermal paste instead of the gunk that they use. I used Noctua's nt-h1. A little expensive but worth its weight in gold (so to speak).
Now, when I overclock it at 1100 Mhz, the fans never reach 100% and temp stays below 85 deg C.
If you decide to go this route, be aware that you'll have no warranty. Also, be careful with the pads over the memory chips and the voltage regulators.

Ya 90+ is way too hot.
High '70s is where you want to be steady at, IMHO. Anything over 85+ is 'pull the plug' time for me.
Basically you ought to go for the cards with the custom coolers on there. The stock coolers aren't up to going 100% / 24 / 7 . When gaming, you are never going at 100% for extended periods, if ever.
Fans mo' fans mo'fans is what you need. You may even be better off removing the stock cooler if they are garbage, and buying a 3rd party GPU cooler or water-based cooler. Or down-clocking your cards. You may only lose 10% performance but be able to run them 24/7.
Re-gooping / re-pasting the GPU like alex above would be a great thing to do to lower temps but takes a little work if you never done something like that before.
I have additional fans set up on my Sapphire and Gigabyte custom cooler cards and run the 7950's at a steady 76 to 79 degrees depending on my room temperature.

If we're talking XFX with their custom coolers, it's the only solution, since the problem they have is the paste. Unfortunately.

Ok, sounds reasonable to me. I don't have any XFX cards myself so can't say for certain.
