Are 2 options for the Bitcoin client?  I think the one I'm trying to load onto my laptop might be too much for my laptop to handle.  It would be nice if there were a bitcoin wallet client that didn't require a lot of time and space that still provides the ability to receive and pay bitcoins to others.

you could always use a cloud wallet like http://blockchain.info or http://coinbase.com

Try Multibit. Multibit is a lighweight client, any laptop can handle it.
