Hi, Welcome to the bitcoin world!

Yes, this is the place to find out everything you want to know about bitcoins and probably alot you really don't need to know Smiley

There is a bitcoin wiki with lots of information.

If you have any specific questions, I could probably answer them (or any of the other people who have been around a while)?

To narrow down... Mining section of this forum is a good start..

Many people do not do mining, so that might not be the best place to start, depending on how you want to use bitcoins.

Use CoinBR to trade bitcoin stocks: CoinBR.com

The best place for betting with bitcoin: BitBet.us

Has anyone ran a successful solo mining operation my initial feeling is, this is where I would like to start what are the realistic possibilities with a budget of around £5k.

Keep in mind that there are no experts in where this is going. Many will claim to be, but noone knows how this experiment will turn out. Beyond the technical aspects of bitcoin, there are only opinions here.

A Good place to start is Bitcoin Step by Step: http://www.amazon.com/Bitcoin-Step-by-ebook/dp/B00A1CUQQU/

A new book on Mining will be out this week: Bitcoin Mining Step by Step.

If you do not own a Kindle reader the download is free and there is a Kindle reader for just about every OS:
http://www.amazon.com/Bitcoin-Step-by-ebook/dp/B00A1CUQQU/

This forum is a great place to be to become an expert, but its only one place if you plan to do a lot of reading not asking.  We can fill in the holes but don't expect us to teach you :-), not that you are.

The Bitcoin Wiki is another.
