I have a small notebook with Xubuntu on it. Is there an easy way to put a Linux Bitcoin wallet on it, or will I need to master some command line stuff?

Depends on the individual wallet... as you can see here, Electrum isn't exactly rocket science to install: https://electrum.org/#download
Install dependencies:
sudo apt-get install python-qt4 python-pip
Install Electrum:
sudo pip2 install https://download.electrum.org/2.9.3/Electrum-2.9.3.tar.gz

The process is the same as on the Windows, you need to unpack the file (tar.gz) and install it. Most likely, you need extra packages, but the command is given.
There is much support of Bitcoin Wallets for Linux systems, you can see it here.
