how is Ripple not just a copycat of Bitcoin?  Any incremental improvement is hugely outweighed by the fact that Bitcoin has the biggest lead right now

Have you read about either?  Ripple and Bitcoin are two very different things.

to be honest I have read only 1 or 2 articles on Ripple and lost interest very quickly. 

It's always tougher to get behind some technology that is pushed by a private company (OpenCoin) rather than an open standard like Bitcoin.  And the lack of users just makes it even less likely.
