What's the Word on TOR, Tails (OS) and VPNs?

I encounter rumors fairly commonly that Know Such has broken TOR, and See Eye has placed firmware on wifi routers (many brands, inc. Belkin).

I have no way of knowing who can do what (apparently even MICROSOFT in their Win 10 has a keystroke logger -- Cortana).

So, what do you guys know that I clearly do not?

-- Is TOR compromised?
-- How about that operating system "Tails"?
-- VPNs?
-- Cutting off MSFT's spyware?

For that matter, even Apple is said to cooperate a little too closely with .gov as well.
