The most popular Bitcoin miners are made by Bitmain.  You'll want to look at the Antminer S9 as a recent release, and also, from a different company, the Avalon 721.

Altcoin mining is more of a starting point.  If you want to put in a significant investment and you have low cost and reliable electricity, you should go straight for Bitcoin mining which a lot of big businesses take part in.

If you're more of a casual user, altcoin GPU mining of coins like Ethereum might be your first choice.  Don't expect to get rich from it though.  Bitcoin mining isn't easy, you do need to put an investment in if you ever expect to get a return on investment.
