You'll need to use a different algorithm called Scrypt.  Google is your friend

Can avalon / butterfly etc be used for litecoin as well? Has anyone done a comparison on pricing to see which is more profitable (given that presumably litecoin is easier, but less valuable than bitcoin)?

No I don't think so, as ASICs are specifically designed (in hardware) for one algorithm. It's like a software manifested directly into hardware. This makes it very efficient on the one side but completly unflexible on the other side (unlike a normal computer it can do only this kind of operations and nothing else).

So in general you can only mine coins with them, which use the same hashing algorithm as bitcoin (SHA-256). For this reason you cannot mine Litecoins with ASICs (as they use Scrypt), but others which also use SHA-256 (AFAIK).

Can't use BFL/Avalon/etc. ASICs for LTC, although you should be able to use them with other sha256 based currencies like PPCoin.

At this point it seems GPU is the only way to go for LTC mining.  Are there any other alternatives on the horizon, say FPGA? I'm guessing the RAM requirements for scrypt hashing make GPU the only reasonable mining solution for awhile, am I wrong?

P2pool is useful system and should be easier to set up if you haven't done it before.

ASICs don't work for script based hashes. It is a memory issue, but not only the RAM, it's the whole chip/cache which is more intensively used. Would need a redesign of the motherboard also.

when i tried to join a litecoin mine pool with minerd all i got was an error asking for a json config file. is there a directory i can find that or do i have to make one myself?

As of today its actually more profitable to mine with GPUs on Litecoins. Difficulty will skyrocket once the FPGA/ASICs hit the bitcoin network. Luckily Litecoins are still ASIC proof :p
