As far as I understand it the value of Primecoin will always increase? because it is used in scientific research, and the difficulty of mining will always increase as higher prime numbers are harder to find. Is this right? At least until quantum computers are invented.

No that's not true at all. Just look at primecoin's charts and you'll see how much it has gone down and up and down..
