Oops, I just forgot to check the transaction fee box when transferring from Mt. Gox to my wallet. Usually 6 confirmations takes an hour,l but if I forgot to add a transaction fee, how long is it going to take my half BTC to show up in my wallet with 6 confirmations?

You can't change the fee after the fact so far as I know, so I think you just have to wait for some pool somewhere to get your feeless transaction into a block. Eventually.

Do you know if it will always confirm that quickly? Because if it will you might as well not include any transaction fees, and just do it that way.

I do not, but a poster above said that mt gox has apparently some deal with a pool to include their transactions even without transaction fees so maybe it's not required?

Basically, if you add a transaction fee, mining pools will favour your transaction for inclusion. However lots of mining pools will include your transaction without a fee. There is a graph of the length of time for approval: http://bitcoinstats.org or http://blockchain.info/charts/avg-confirmation-time. Transactions that are particularly complicated (to/from lots of addresses) can sometimes "expire" because they take longer than two days to get confirmed. It's sometimes just unlucky.

I always choose that transaction fee because the price of BTC is so volatile but I've always been curious how long it takes if i don't include it.

I sent a transaction once without a fee, it didn't come through and after some days the network just forgot the transaction and I got my bitcoins back.

is that two days a constant written in stone or could it be 3 days, 1 week etC?
