Thanks for the replies guys!
I managed to get more by using this method - feel free to try it but it again ends up costing you more due to fee's etc.

Sign up at Virwox.com

Add funds (limited to £48 a day)
Buy SLL with your £
Now you have SLL you can sell this for BTC and withdraw it to where you like!

Enjoy! Smiley

It's crazy that we can't just use mtgox - a problem with UK banks being unwilling to wire the money?

I'm new and have used localbitcoins twice. Both transactions took less than 15 mins and couldn't have been easier. As long as you make sure you use people with a good number of positive feedbacks, you should be fine.

You have to build up your rep before you can do bigger trades so it might not be the best option for you pandat.

using localbitcoins etc. is okay if you can find a decent seller although most of their prices are a bit high! Sad

- Remember most of the vendors sell 0.xxx amount of btc too Smiley

No, I'm sure you can still wire the funds directly to Japan yourself but the fees are prohibitive unless you're wiring something at least semi-serious (>>1000 GBP say).

Barclays froze Mt Gox's UK feeder account (which accepted direct UK bank transfer payments) on 25 September 2012.
