API call for sync status

I would like to write a script to launch bitcoind each 24 hours and stop it after sync, but I don't find any API call to get the synchronization to the blockchain status.

Which API call should I use to know when bitcoind is synchronized to the network ?

I don't know of any. If I were you, I would probably check against blockexplorer.com, blockchain.info and twitter.com/blockheaders, for example.
