I have been out of the bitcoin game for awhile now and wanted to update my wallet for obvious reasons, also due to the alert keys warning I get(no idea what that is.) I just want to make sure that I don't mess it up and have to jump off a skyscraper Grin

Make a backup or two (or 3) of the wallet.dat before doing anything, upgrading should be easy though.  Also, be sure to scan for viruses.

This has some info about the message:

That's what 2RobPet did when upgrading from Bitcoin core v 0.8.3-beta. He also used the old blockchain files from v 0.8.3-beta in the latest version of core to save time syncing, and said it worked.

Solved it. Updated bitcoin core to the latest version, set the data directory to the same as my old version so I didn't have to redownload the blockchain, then cancelled the transaction with the abandon transaction function. Transaction sent and confirmed now.

Yes. You don't even need to change anything in the datadir (like swapping in the wallet.dat file) since the latest version of Core will just use what is already there.
