It's just the price for the actual value in return: solid money.

It furthers technological progress in the computer/semiconductor industry.

Traditional money also requires loads of energy to maintain.

Anything else you can think of?

Just determine the amount of energy necessary for maintaining existing payments systems (running of servers, printing of money, people performing useless jobs at banks) and the current payment systems aren't even secure (it works around trust ...).

It is the current system which is a waste, not just of energy, just a general waste.
