I have been around this game for some time, and am a holder of almost every alt. coin out there, but just how many are being created all the time? And what is your opinion on this affecting btc?

I keep seeing new ones every day. Anybody can create one and advertise it. Whoever makes it can start mining immediately, and if it's ever worth something, they can cash out. Some people might have better intentions, but it's still difficult to get any market share. I don't see any of the newer alt coins affecting bitcoin right now. While there may be room in the future for more than a few, right now I don't think there is.

Yes I was going to say the only way a new coin will ever come up to the standard of btc is if it is not an alt. coin, would have to be completely independent. Thats why they are less valued, they are the lesser of btc.

There are a ridiculous amount of currencies out there but I'm assuming no figure on how many are created every week. I would guess that most die and fail after a few months/weeks.

Based on what we have or what we had, I think those coins will be coming out any minute now:

Since we have Feather coin, we need: AirCoin, CottonCoin, BronzeCoin, LeadCoin ...

Since we have ChinaCoin, we need RussianCoin (did we have this?), EuroCoin, IndiaCoin, BrazilCoin, BritCoin ..... how about TexasCoin, CaliCoin?

Mother Day is coming, how about we create MotherCoin for a celebration? FatherCoin? ChildCoin? LaborCoin?

Yeah, collect them all  Cheesy

I suggest these ones:

CloneCoin: Exactly like Bitcoin, but new

LiteBar: 4x times more reward than BitBar, still rare...but not THAT rare

MultiCoin: Get awarded with 42 different coins for mining

Heck if I knew how to do it, I would implement a Coin that you can mine while mining for BitCoin.

it's making BTC more popular

I think teenagers like alt coins... something like modern baseball cards.... and all alt coins are based on BTC, therefore BTC=more popular

The more alts created, the more options for pumping. I wish 50 alts were created per week.

The rate of new coins has really picked up this last week with all the scrypt based clones. I would guess this is mainly because of gpu mining slowly being phased out of bitcoin and the profitability of litecoin dropping with the rapid difficulty increase.

For me it has been pretty profitable to jump around mining these new coins, however, I've been fairly conservative and haven't switched until I started seeing them show up on exchanges. I also exchange these coins for bitcoins immediately after i mine them because I don't see much long term potential for them.

In the long term, I think these alt coins are a good thing for bitcoin as they all share the same codebase as bitcoin with just a few tweaked parameters which is kind of demonstrating the strength of the bitcoin protocol. I also don't see them affecting the price of bitcoin as the vast majority of them will die off after the initial excitement wears off, especially the ones that are just direct clones of bitcoin or another alt coin.

In short, it's just to accomodate GPU miners. I don't see any ground breaking innovation in any of them.

I think that altcoin are just an advantage for BTC. Most of them don't reach the dollar market, and are traded for BTC strengthening its 'refererence coin' position
