Distributed ledgers that can be verified by mutually distrusting parties are one of those broadly applicable solutions that one can envision having a significant positive impact in many unexpected areas.

What areas of society (e.g., services or social institutions) do you predict blockchains will have a significant impact on?

Open-sourced democratic governance and improved voting systems. Read this, for example.

Check out what people are doing with Ethereum, that will give you the start of the best of what can happen on the blockchain.

For businesses - more efficient and honest transactions.

For politics - cheaper processing of tax transactions, more fair elections, better voting records.

For non-profit - more efficient and cheaper collection of charitable contributions.

For start-ups - crowd funding, token creation, application development.

I'm really excited for this use case. Thanks for sharing!

One of the uses I'm more excited about is P2P trading and P2P payments.

Nothing can beat blockchain and cryptocurrencies from that perspective.

Looking forward to see improvements and adoption on these two use cases.

-Voting and the democratic process.
-Tracking guns.
-Logistics and supply chain management (tracking of goods)
-Other distribution (e.g. who the rightful owners of an e-book are)
-Betting through the use of oracles - this can be done P2P.

You have to think of the blockchain in this instance like an easy way of verifying ownership and events that happen.  That's what results in the best use cases.

Thanks for sharing! Cheesy That's an interesting perspective. The ability for the network itself to be used as an arbiter is game changer in terms of trade in an increasingly more connected global community.

What do you see as the major advantages of cryptocurrencies for P2P trade and payments?

When US senate issues heavy financial sanctions on some countries simply because they feel like it and just feel good to be a bully and all other countries obey out of fear, bitcoin and blockchain says I don't care Mr, Trump I'm not afraid of you and your billions of dollars.
Where ever banks and their partners could dictate their terms you could slap them in the face by adopting and using bitcoin as a currency.

It will be interesting to see how governments around the world respond as blockchain and bitcoin have more high profile use cases. It was promising to see an example of a state recognizing digital currencies in the case where the South Korean government decided to auction off seized bitcoins.
