Is the New Ransomware Demanding Bitcoin More Dangerous Than WannaCry?
Last months the ransomware software Wanna Cry attacked 200,000 victims in at least 150 countries worldwide and a huge fuss was made of the capability of hackers to use Bitcoin in illegal actions. Now, a new ransomware comes on stage.

A new virus-encryptor began its attacks on Tuesday in Ukraine. The virus blocks computers and demands a ransom of $300 in Bitcoins like WannaCry did. According to reports, by Wednesday the Bitcoin wallet, which was given by ransomware for the transfer of funds, had received nine transfers.

This is the newest ransomware and as far as I see, still no decryptor created by Kaspersky Labs. In this link it shows the ransomware which can be eliminated with the programs from this lab.

I think that getting only 9 transfers it shows that people are more aware about online security now, especially the bitcoin people who always save their seed or their wallet.dat backup in different place. So they do not care about ransomware, 1 simple format and they are up an running like nothing happened. I think a lot of businesses and personal users should use the backup a lot nowadays because of the risk of ransomware if they think that their files are precious. A external HDD or a cloud storage would save them from different type of ransomwares.

Calm down. Computers at the household level, they are not interested. Please tell me what you have stored in the computer such that you cannot recover? Who will pay them $ 300? This virus is dangerous for large corporations. It is a war of intelligence.

It is wrong, they don't target only large corporations although that maybe their primary goal. Bitcoin users usually are not large corporations but individuals like you and me who keep their bitcoins in their PC. Luckily with the new generation of wallets HD we can keep the seed in different places and do not fall victim of this ransom. However from what I read for this ransomware it cannot be decrypted through the master key they tell you in the black and red page where the ransom message it is displayed. Computer experts says that Petya 2017 is more a wiper, even if the hackers get the money they cannot decrypt anything, so the only option left for the victim is to format the hard drive, losing everything.

This situation should be put in front to all users, to keep their bitcoin wallets in different places and always backup their wallets and seeds. This should be done for all files but very few person do this, it needs to be done more in this aspect to make the people aware how important is the backup of their documents. Many do not apply backups to their files as they think backup is not that important, which is clearly wrong.

I heard there are ransomwares that are sort of delayed action to frustrate you that even if you made backups, you don't know if those are infected as well, since they don't immediately lock down your files. Ah criminals, always ahead of everyone.

Guess you can compare this to counterfeiting money. Larger denominations would earn you more, while smaller denominations might not even be noticed. With bitcoin users, the really large ones would cause an alarm when hacked, while the really small ones are not worth the effort. It's about finding the Goldilocks zone.
