Why, I love it when people send bitcoin to the great /dev/null in the sky.  It makes me feel all warm inside.  I hope they sang the proper incantation.

Anyway, destroy the private key? Everyone knows you just send to 1BitcoinEaterAddressDontSendf59kuE. It's much more ceremonial (and provable).

Thank you Wired for increasing the worth of my Bitcoins by about 2/21000000 xD (actually a bit more, depending on how many coins are already lost ^^)

They're just saying that to be dicks. They likely don't even get that it's a donation to the rest of us. And the guy is pool mining. He probably hasn't even withdrawn the balance.

Contrary to real life objects you cannot destroy value by destroying single Bitcoins.
Unless you destroy an amount that hurts the whole system it will do nothing, but redistribute the value to all other Coins.
(Giving it to charity would have been better though)

Yes. Not only should they consider donating to charity, they should appreciate that obtaining a BFL review ASIC is a privilege. Many people have paid in advance and waited a nearly a year to receive theirs.

They only do this because the find it really super difficult to admit to being wrong in the past I think. They prefer to be perceived as immoral (for not donating) and stupid (for diminishing supply). Then again, did they destroy the coins? Did they really do that? For sure? I wouldnt be too surprised if it turned out that they also lie a little bit at times.

The reason I don't like this is because they are sending a wrong message about BTC demonstrating it as a get rick quick scheme, and they also managed to receive their unit before everyone who actually ordered theirs did. Butterfly Labs should be more focused on completing existing orders than getting new orders...

Fortunately, the general consensus in the comments section are favorable for BTC; people are, in fact, acknowledging it as valuable.

Anyway, Wired has proven that it's anti-BTC, for whatever backwoods reason, so I will not be visiting their site again.
