Hey there, I hope this is the right place to ask. I was wondering how usual it is for projects to just copy code of older/ already existing projects. I know, that it is quiet usual to just copy certain parts of code, but I'd like to know in which extend this normally happens. I came across ETHD which is derived from NovaCoin, however the Code is almost COMPLETELY the same...I feel like other projects modify it at least a bit. ETHD Github : https://github.com/abi2018/wz37daNovaCoin Github : https://github.com/novacoin-project/novacoinIt would be nice to know in which extend code normally gets copied. Greetings

I dont' know the projects but I guess one project is simply a fork from the other one. You could see a fork as a simple copy of the current project code is forked from. You do this to start independent development on it, creating a distinct and separate piece of software.
Just take a look at Bitcoin forks: Bitcoin XT Bitcoin Classic Bitcoin Unlimited Bitcoin Cash Litecoin

At first, think you for your response. I am well aware of forks, however in this specific case (ETHD-Nova) the Dev appears to be trying to sell his Project as "standalone" even though it appears, he just copied the code, so my question refered more to how usual this is. Ofc, in the end almost all projects are derived from earlier ones.

Some projects are just copies of another. But I have seen a lot of projects where devs copied code or part of it, then modified it or add something new.

99% of coins you see around here are clones, 99% of coins who announce a feature just clone the feature from another wallet.

There are only a few coins who really have developers who are doing more then just copy pasting code from others. Once you learn to identify them early on, be ready to make a lot of money.

Sure, but its ridiculous that some are not even trying to hide their (appearent) inability to program. And its even more ridiculous, that there are tens of thousands of people, not caring about this fact. But I guess I am not the first one criticising projects getting millions of dollars for nothing but a good idea...

Is like every software, website and so many things in nature. One takes the design of the other. It is normal, that only few people are able to create out of thin air, but most are able to improve something or market it right, to sell it or make money out of it.

If you want to give to crypto world something interesting, you should create something new. The market is full of clones

Clones do not drew the market well and it does not look nice and different from one another if one knows deeper about it. Spending tons of money in a new projects expecting for good profit out it, why dont we have a good skilled developers creating new stuffs? We have huge developers with unique skilled. Lets think new, create new and live in new situations.

its not common to just copy the code if developers do that, and dont take it to another way that can be effective somehow its just a useless coin, and the price can jump or not - its like a casino
look at zcash forks for example - each fork takes it to another direction its different uses of the amazing zero knowledge technology
in other words - ETHD shitcoin XD why dont you invest in coins that show real results? the real time to invest is when the coin shows some good project achievements but investing in a coin just because it has the word ethereum and the word DARK in its name?

Yes, its the developers that count most. Which is why I had to throw some $ at EOS on that fact alone, Larimer is a stud

This is usual because we have seen many copycats for altcoins. There is a unique feature they add to the cloned software and market it with that one feature and all the remaining code is same.It is cloned.

There is probably some differences that you didn't see. Either way, the base code, as long as the basics are altered, and technically, even if not, still creates a brand new coin. Bitcoin can be completely cloned and the dev that does it takes the whole thing in a new direction. It is nice when at least the acronym is different, but if that is the only alteration, then you have the same coin parameters, but a new coin and handled by new people, the end results are going to be different.
But when you, for example, clone a masternode coin, change some params like name/supply/premine/etc. Then create a thread boasting about your new anonymous coin, to me it doesn't really count as a new coin. Just number xxxx on the list of clones.
