I've been in crypto for a while and I never had a problem using online exchanges until last year.  Rather than go on forever about my situation I'll just put it in a nutshell. I can't use these exchanges without government issued ID proving that I'm from another state besides New York  ( I'm in the process of getting an id from another state but that takes time).

Can anybody help me with being able to use online exchanges to buy btc/altcoin while a NY resident ? I really don't like the idea of government interfering with private funds . That's one of the reasons I'm soo interested in crypto, but that's another story.  Can I use a TOR browser ? Please any suggestions would be helpful.

Sidenote. I live in Manhattan , if I go over to Jersey and try to go on the online exchanges, is that a way around the NY Resident rule ?

You can use TOR browser at your own risk, no matter how good TOR browser is in giving you another US IP or even a New York one IP the problem with TOR is it makes your computer receive a lot of unusual traffic (making you anonymous if you follow the TOR guidelines) but also maximizes the risk of your exchange account getting hacked very soon, so for me its not a very good idea to use TOR in this situation.

OK what about a VPN? Or is that just a heightened version of the Tor browser on a larger scale ?

With a very legit and trustworthy VPN you have a better security than TOR regarding the possibility of your account getting hacked in the exchange because the VPN assign you only 1 IP so it should be safe. However the authorities can still track you when using VPN but that takes time so I think they will not bother, thats the only downside.

I moved to new york for almost a year and I still don't understand the legality of bitcoin in NY can someone explain?
Also I have been using exchanges and online wallet normally being in NY (Brooklyn) Exchanges, Wallets, Services, Localbitcoin, Paxful.
No problem at all but would really want to know how it all works in new york, don't want to get into any troble.

use the licensed ones like Coinbase, Gemini and itBit  . you won't have any problem with them. they are fully regulated.

New York State Department of Financial Services  has granted licenses to these exchangers.

I also use other sites like hashnest(they stopped accepting deposit from ny a few months ago but I can still buy and sell hashrate with the balance that I have), hashflare and also mining pools etc.
Never used gemini or itbit but have been using poloniex and bittrex normally. (no fiat onlt crypto to crypto)
