Supercomputer projects: the first coin I know about is GNT, and recently XEL raises. SONM is also mentioned as a good choice https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2070708.0
And what else I don't mention yet? Too many choices for supercomputer coins. What make these coins hot? This thread is created to talk about supercomputer coins. What is the best choice in your eyes?
Thanks.

They all are potentially good projects. But I really don't know what is gonna make their prices higher. I mean yeah people may need for academic calculations but prices can't be that high in my opinion.

http://www.gridcoin.us/

The difference being, the underlying supercomputer (distributed computer system being a more accurate description) - BOINC - has been used by the scientific community for 15 years. The crypto part, which runs alongside/on top of BOINC, is also pretty mature. The whole setup is way more mature than any of the others.

I mine it myself. It's a crypto that actually has real world use. GOOD real world use. A rare thing. Most are still conceptual/vapor-ware ... at best. Not so GRC. Most of my compute power is working on gene sequencing at the moment. So when your get cancer in 20 years time, and they use gene therapy to sort it, you can thank me then.

One of the most criminally overlooked coins in the crypto space if you ask me. Development is ongoing. DPoR is innovative and perfectly suited to the coin and it's use-case. Branding and marketing, with more widespread usage and adoption in mind, are key areas of activity at the moment. Reddit and GitHub are both pretty active and the devs are active, communicative, and helpful. It's an excellent community.

Depends how they set themselves up.

In GRC's case, my feeling is that allowing projects/companies to acquire computer power, could be achieved by giving them bulk buy of the coin, which would give them guaranteed, provable, compute resources.

Questions like these are exactly the kind of thing being asked within the GRC community right now. The technical parts, ie - having a working distributed computer system - are already in place and working. Ahead of the field.

Not to mention, if people understand/see the value in projects like this, you may find a pretty reasonable degree of altruistic investment. Some people do still actually like us their money to do good things. Not everyone is in this grubbing around trying to make as many fast bucks as possible. This is often more the case with richer philanthropic types. Which are exactly the kind of people you'd want involved. Just look at the Gates Foundation and Factom.
