is there any coin that is mineable with standard equipment? I'm willing to join a pool, but should I even bother? my concern is that I'm going to sink a lot of time and work into a project that will struggle to break even.

Well, some more details will be greatly appreciated like your system having a dedicated GPU? Model of CPU? PSU Wattage and rating? OS?
