It will be harmless if you have a good pc specs that can multi task the cryptominer load and your personal activities. In contrary, if you have a low end pc there is chance that it might hanged up and become unresponsive. That's were you'll notice the disadvantage of browsing a site with embedded cryptominer.

One example of those site that tried coinhive's cryptominer is uptobox.com, a file upload webpage, dropbox.com clone. They said that they used it as a test in exchange for ads revenue.

"Uptobox.com said that it had it removed CoinHive JavaScript code from its site after completing tests. “Ads are better Smiley,” it told El Reg."

Websites are trying to push mining as a money source but most users pcs wont be profitable on some coins. Plus in sone countries its classified as theft and if caught could result in jail time. So sketchy websites do it to provide income since they dont care about jailtime. Kind of like pirate bay but i do not think even with their traffic its profitable enough to do it. Its cents per machine like I said, jail time and wrecks computers in some cases. Dont be a scummy human being please. Vote no to internet browser mining. Respect people and make it a choice instead of a donation.
The fact this exists at all should tell to us that this is profitable, they are not using their own machines to do the mining that is the beauty of the trick for them, even if they only earn a few cents per user sites like the piratebay with millions of users are going to make a small fortune out of their users especially those that are not very tech savvy and that leave their browsers open and unattended for hours.

Came across a site, which tried to upload Trojan to my PC. It turned out it was using my capacities for mining while I was at the site. What do you know about such sites? Do they do any harm to PCs? And is it profitable to mine by such means?

Not surprising and been a couple of these incidents lately already. They're all mining Monero, pretty sure through Coinhive with the infected computer's hardware. Not sure how much they've managed to rake in, though.

If your computer slows down and starts overheating when you visit a site, it's best to install an antivirus to check things out.

Obviously it greatest harm to your PC. And it is now possible to mine with browser itself if you have seen the recent updates form eh freebitco faucet. They have published official browser mining from their website which means you can mine by starting the mining right from the browser. Whatever you experienced might be the same case and I beige it will harm your PC in most dangerous way. What if you left the PC open and went away? It can start mining on full capacity and it might just get heated up to fvck your PC in first place and burn everything. Thats PC after all and without proper conditions it can’t survive long. They will get profits and will run aways for no explanation at all. So beware of such sites and if you feel trojan attack then better to go away from he site.
