I think this is no news, hackers had been targeting exchanges and other financial institution to get out of these institution.  Though it is surprising that North Korean Hackers are targeting Cryptocurrency eschanges when they can try to hack international banks. Though probably it is because of the decentralized system and the full access on the address right after it was transferred.  Though this should had been a news all over the globe if it is true.

I agree, the news hasn't appeared on any reputable news site, which should happen if the news is true. However, I've found at least 3 sites which were talking about it:

https://www.coindesk.com/report-north-korea-targets-south-koreas-bitcoin-exchanges-cyber-attacks/

https://techcrunch.com/2017/09/13/north-korea-hackers-bitcoin-ethereum/

http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/853444/north-korea-kim-jong-un-pyongyang-bitcoin-hack-hackers-nuclear-war-usa-donald-trump

I don't know whether they can succeed in hacking foreign exchanges, but they definitely can try that.

This is the new, modern day warfare. I agree with Trump, its time to finally deal with the NK problem. It has been put off far too long, and now look at the situation the world finds itself it.
Actually they are scaring world because they know that if they scare the world then they will be more power and people will afraid from them so that's why they are doing that as you mentioned trump in a middle don't even expect from him.

hacking international banks will trigger more sanction from the world to their country, other thing if they are stealing money from cryptocurrencies exchange which out of any government coverage.
no government backing up bitcoin, i'd say, more convenient and safer option for NK to go .

Old news, south korea’s top crypto exchange bithumb, the world’s fourth largest exchange, was hacked in late June, while the country’s top ethereum exchange is said to have lost over $1 million via a breach earlier this month. They suspect NK hackers.

I would be much more scared of the hackers that people don't know of. If you read about the blogs of exchanges sometimes it is clear that there are thousands upon thousands of hacking attempts daily.

There is so much to gain that they simply have a huge target on their backs.

North Korean hackers are targeting cryptocurrency exchange sites. This is the result of the recent sanctions that the united nations has made on North Korea. It has been said that North Korea is also planning to start mining at a very large scale to overcome those sanctions.

Is it true ? Is this not propaganda news ? I think they will think many times before doing the execution. how do they know NK hackers will act?

Another FUD with no proof? Hackers all around the world want to target exchanges, even if they aren't BTC.

North Korea also has an electricity problem

I doubt that would be profitable for them to mine.

And at most 1800 BTC can be mined by days by EVERYONE in the network, how much would they get with mining?

There is some proof. See the CNN report here: http://money.cnn.com/2017/09/12/technology/north-korea-hackers-bitcoin/index.html

Quote
FireEye says it has identified three attacks against South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges that took place between May and July, all of them linked to North Korean hackers. The spike in activity began soon after the U.S. said it planned to ratchet up sanctions against North Korea.

FireEye identified the North Korean group behind the bitcoin attacks as TEMP.Hermit. Other security firms have linked the group to past high-profile cyberattacks, including the hacking of Sony Pictures in 2014.

As indicated, though, the scope of the attacks is much more limited than the OP suggested. These attacks are primarily aimed at South Korea. But this is certainly a good opportunity to consider one's security in regards to exchange accounts. Phone number porting is becoming more and more problematic these days; you should always use a form of 2FA that cannot be socially engineered.

The problem with North Korea is that is not really a country it is closer to a cult, where the leader is everything, even if all the North Korea leaders disappeared overnight, you have a population that has been completely brainwashed, so I do not see how the problem is going to disappear anytime soon.

North Korea is much smarter than most North Americans are led to believe by our governments. The reality is they are a highly technical country with Nuclear weapons and top-notch hacking skills. We must take them seriously!

What's new about hacking the exchanges? It's never been old as hackers are keeping an eye all the time on where it has a big money on it's business. But North Korean hackers, seriously as I watched in some documentaries they are also good in information technology is this what Kim Jong Un teaches them? And the famous reminder that don't store your bitcoins on an exchange should be followed.

Banks have more money but they can always get that money back some way or another but with bitcoin this is not the case once that bitcoin is in your wallet then there is no way to get it back, I think this is what is making bitcoin attractive not only to North Korea hackers but to hackers in general.
