I'm just thinking about whether the US could adapt its regulations to fit a Bitcoin future.

Has there been any discussion that someone could point me to about whether and how the US could still enforce AML rules with Bitcoin?  Or is it impossible?

The US Gov is literally enforcing Anti-money laundering as we speak. They shut down BTC-e for this very reason. They suspected it to be facilitating the laundering of illegally acquired funds.
