I used a 6 pin to molex cable to power two of these:

https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1TwdAkEUIL1JjSZFrq6z3xFXaM/3-in-1-4pin-molex-pci-e-riser-008-card-6pin-riser-sata-60cm-pcie-1x.jpg

...turns out using my breakout bord with the six-pin to molex adapter ends up sending 12V on one side and the ground on the other, whereas the normal pinout for molex is ground in the middle and power outside.

So, yeah, beware of this. It's not because it goes in that it is indeed compatible...

Ouch,

Fortunately these were on a separate supply and nothing was apparently harmed (except for one connector very slightly melted).

Can I ask why you converted the 6 pin to molex?  I would think that connection would be far more stable at higher loads.  if you want to maximize your psu buy some 6 pin splitters. Easily two risers can run off one 6 pin cable.

I need my 6-pin to 6/8-pin to power the cards, so I wanted to use something else to power the risers.

sure if you do things without checking information like PINOUTs on connectors, person with atleast half a brain would know to check that kinda stuff before just connecting something to it

Just to make you happy, I also checked with a SATA power cable on a sacrificial riser: magic smoke Grin
