how effective blockchain algorithm is ?

i tried to search and read about the blockchain algorithm but its really hard to understand. what should i do or what should i learn about before understanding and reading of the blockchain algorithm.also after reading the algorithm i came to know that all miners are mining the next block at the same time, and there are thousands of nodes, how could it be that there are no collisions ?
