I'm trying to build ducting to get heat from 4 s7s out of the basement through the exhaust for the dryer and want to know if it's big enough or needs to be widened? Should the exhaust have it's own fans pulling air?

Got friends and family bugging you to explain Bitcoin? Point them to https://bitcoinfaq.info for some answers. I've built the site to have simple answers to complete newcomers and info on what is involved in getting started with mining.

I'm openly taking questions and updating the site with answers and walk-throughs.

1 watt = about 3.4 btu

so 1000 watts = 3400 btu

200 watts = 680 btu

thus  the s-7 is close to a 4000btu heater

the cfm is about 200 at 4000 rpm fan speed

I would add a fan to pull the air. The 200 cfm from the S7s isnt strong enough to push air that far and make a difference. I found the air gets trapped. A simple fan 300-500 cfm thats quiet will suck the air and heat the rooms nicely.

Does all the 1000W get converted to heat?  I had an HVAC guy mention to me that even though the unit takes 1000W, if the antminer is 80% efficient (for example), then only 200W is released as heat.

I'm not clear on efficiency of the power useage for the antminer, nor how much of the 1000W actually is converted into heat.

Any ideas?

Miner/Computer Electronics = >99% energy converts to heat.  Your HVAC guy is apparently not very computer savvy...  Roll Eyes

ANY computer-type equipment (specifically including cryptocoin mining gear) converts pretty much ALL of it's wattage consumed to heat.
The difference is measured in MILLIwatts at most (a little of the power the network interface uses gets pushed elsewhere - but it also takes IN a little from elsewhere, and we're talking MILLIwatts at most here).

A typical "drier duct" is in the 4-6" range - which is NOT enough to handle the CFM of 4 miners like the S7 without a "booster" fan in the duct - and a 4" duct isn't going to be enough WITH a booster fan.

I'd suggest upgrading the duct to 8" if possible AND adding a "booster" fan to it - then keep in mind you need air INTAKE as well somehow into the room.

As said ^^, aside from the way they operate *any* miner including those for altcoins are perfect heaters just the same as a regular electric space heater. Far more complicated way to use power vs a resistance element or ceramic one but end result is the same: All power in from the wall ends up as heat out. The only efficiency we care about regarding the miner itself is how many GHs per watt used.

With a PSU, ja is different because it is transforming power in to power out so for that we want highest efficiency possible. Still, even using a PSU rated as 96% eff that still means that the remaining 4% difference between DC power out vs AC power in becomes heat.

A quick search on Google (hint hint) give us 1kw = 3,415BTU/hr

Your four s7 gives you 4000W total power which is equal to 13648BTU/h or 1.13TR heat load

If one s7 has 200cfm fan then you need 800 cfm main duct to collect all 4 miners. That is around 12" flex duct with 1400fpm velocity
