It's been a rough few days, but it's been nice and reassuring seeing the Poles holding steady up there near the top of bitcoincharts. Maybe it's the still fresh memory of fifty years as a satellite of the Sovjet Union but the Poles remained un-phased by the bearshit-storm blowing down off the Mountain. From now on I will be keeping an eye on the Polish exchange to get a sense of deeper sentiment, what's really going on regardless of the flocks of skittish birds taking off at every sudden movement and obscuring the longer-term view. Dunno if the nature of the Polish market tends to be longer term bitcoin savers or people actually using bitcoins for something, would be interesting to know.

Agreed, if Bitomat got their act together, translated their website into English and other languages, and allowed different currencies to be traded, they'd be pretty much unstoppable.

They remained un-phased because nowadays they are a satellite of the United States.

They remained un-phased because nowadays they are a satellite of the United States. To be correct whole EU is satellite of US (especially in a military sense) but it seems that you are financial satelite of China. Anyway, we are doing good, we have biggest non english forum http://bitcoin.pl/forum/index.php and few days old pool mine: http://polmine.pl/en/?setlang=en (en version) Trenads are pretty similar to global ones, there is a mining boom, speculation paradise and small slowly growing economy.

They remained un-phased because nowadays they are a satellite of the United States. To be correct whole EU is satellite of US (especially in a military sense) To be correct this is incorrect. Of course, there are many satellites of the US especially among Eastern European countries. Poland, however, is a very special case. They have the lowest orbit as a satellite of the United States among all EU member countries.

My only point in mentioning was that life under a communist regime beholden to the needs of Moscow was partially character forming of the Polish bitcoin market. One tends to be more unflinching and have stronger nerves in pursuit of better money if one can closely remember queuing for bread, oppressive government and hyperinflation. I could be wrong, just my theory.

Well its not that good atm either. Recently about a 6 moths ago we had a big "government action", when they have closed over 1500 shops in the country. The shops weren't braking any laws but for politics it was a good way to rise up stats, and prevent someone else to grab their position. Every owner had a right to complain, but the government is doing everything to prevent them for justice against them. So actually may by the country itself is done with the soviet regiment but those old (99% of them are) politics are holding to the soviet tradition in way of acting and ruling, well poor bastards don't know how to do it other way, they were born and raised on that foundations. So the regiment is not over yet, its just covered up with new clothes so everyone would think its over

I could be wrong, just my theory. We have 2011, fall of communism regime was in 1989 (22 years ago!), 95% of BitCoin users have no memories (or early childhood memories) from previous system so it hasn't affected their "mindset". Your point of view is idealistic, of course there is a freedom-loving anti-central part of it, but the reality is slightly different and main factors are strictly economic.

I think Poland got so big bitcoin market because it's really easy to deposit funds at bitomat. From very popular bank it's like 1h normally, rest are <24h. Withdraw of PLN is <8h, soooo yeah! Another thing can be memory of hyperinflation in 90's - everybody was a millionaire So many people still remember that fiat money can go very wrong anytime.

Wasn't there a problem with hyperinflation in Russia after the end of Communism in the 90s? I wonder why Russian exchanges aren't more popular too.

This is an easy answer. Russian ruble is backed by oil and gas which is better than gold. Polish welfare state is backed by debt, debt and debt.

There is no big exchange in Russia, becouse any newly established buisnes like that is highly vulnerable here. Starting project like this, means very risky nature of establisher, and that risky nature of owner, is a main enemy of new exchange. There will be big exchanges in Russia, but way to them will be long and rough.
Curently we have some number of small and therefore untrusted exchangers. When owners of such a exchangers will cooperate and become a partners, than it will mean establishing one big, normal exchange. Users will have more trust in that exchange, knowing that partner owners controlling each other.
That process will take at least a year.
