Oh, wow... Just stumbled in this thread. This sure sucks, I know the feeling (Bitfinex).
No, there's a huge difference. Bitfinex managed seriously and professionaly the theft, as they made a general loss about 36% on every account and converting part of their future profits on "tokens" with the goal to recover on the long run the whole loss.
Kraken instead, they don't do anything, they leave your balance to zero forever, and also they claim you are a victim of phishing (false) and accuse you to be an idiot without a 2FA.. that's also easily confutable because their 2FA system was revokable without the need of the password.
Kraken is pure shit in itself and its behaviour, even if they have leakers inside.

My Kraken account got emptied 36 hours ago. Lost about 12k Euro of BTC.
I am now in discussion with them on this, similar status.
Who and how did they compromize my account? I do not know.
I did not have the sms verification setup - my mistake.
But, the IP that withdrew funds is on the other side of the world (Somewhere in canada/us?) And definitely i was not warned of the transaction prior to it. Only got an email after the funds were sent...

So within the same timeframe as I was robbed, which suggests to me that Kraken has been compromised...and most likely, from within.

Sure, they can say that they have given us the tools to make our accounts more secure, and point out that we haven't made use of them, but what I would say to that is that customer security is primarily their business, and their responsibilty before it is Joe Public's. Even if all they done was straightforward email confirmation before sending any funds, like what practically every other exchange does, then neither your funds, nor my funds would have been stolen.

It seems to me that Kraken's default settings are designed to faciliate theft, only for them to be in the position to turn around and say 'but you never used advanced security options so fuck you".

Like everything else in crpyto land....dodgy as fuck, and I have zero faith that it isn't Kraken staff themselves who are executing these thefts on 'n00bs' who have not made use of more advanced security features.

I totally agree with your point of Almost all the exchanges are requesting the email confirmation of withdraw by default and their is no point of changing this security on this exchanges which make good security for the hackers as if they are not able to hack your email id then this type of hacking could have been stopped.  Kraken being a big exchange they are asking so many details before opening the account and coming to security part they are so big lame in blaming fully on customers who have not opted for 2fa security , but they should have automatically have taken the email verification of withdraw security by default like other exchanges.

so this is a lesson for all the users who are using exchanges as wallet to store bitcoin and if like this any thing happen they can do nothing but to feel sorry for this type of loss.

Not everyone store bitcoins in exchanges. In my case, I only do so when I'm actively trading. Bad luck after two years of not using Bitfinex and only one time to trade btc, it gets hacked.

There's always that risk of storing crypto online, in site wallets, a lesson that should have been learnt many times over from the past security incidents (I don't want to say again but let's say MG). It's an acceptable risk for myself, having small amounts of coins in various site wallets - easy access and long-term savings on transaction fees - but the point is never to keep the coins you can't afford to compromise in anything other than a wallet you secure yourself.

Overall, bad news for the community, but hardly a surprise.

Some of the users on here really are their own worst enemy. How on Earth can Kraken be responsible for a user's neglect and carelessness? I know it sucks when you have your account compromised and your funds wiped out, but isn't that what 2FA is for? Kraken are adamant that users set this up and some many ignore this critical advice. Also, why is so much kept on an exchange unless you have shit for brains?

There's no point going to the Financial Ombudsman of the police because:

Cryptocurrencies, wallets and exchanges are UNREGULATED which means that they do not have to comply with laws as dictated by the Financial Ombudsman.

The police don't really understand cryptocurrencies and won't have a clue on how to start an investigation. Another reason is that it's very hard to track any transaction on the blockchain and also it's impossible to trace where the hack took place as most hackers who know their stuff will either use a secure VPN or hide their IP address in another way. The public IP will only get you as far as the router anyway, not to the actual computer that was used. There's no way that the police (in the UK anyway) can be bothered to spend the time on this.

Guys, just set up 2FA - how hard can it be? If it's too much trouble, at least change your exchange and email passwords weekly.

With BTC/ETH/LTC/XRP on a roll, hacking is only going to increase.

Bitstamp is better if you can pass KYC verification easily.Avoid from this cheaters and go to use alternative exchanges.Kraken and yobit are worst exchanges from my experience. I always stock to bittrex and newer has big issues with their support.

From my experience, ALL exchanges have their problems which why we need regulation. It’s no longer Micky Mouse money that we’re talking about here. I know some people who have even remortgaged to become big players. I’m so goad that I have my hardware wallet now that is also backed up.

Banks and governments are showing a lot of interest so I think we’ll see some sort of regulation within the next couple of years.
