So I used to mine dogecoins, 42coin, fedoracoin, and other meme crap. Ended up getting 2.5btc from trading and whatnot. Lost most of it from cryptsy.

Anyhow, I don't remember anything about mining, what settings to use, what miner to use, etc.
Also, I hear some coins are better suited for nvidia now? Is my r9 290 still good for anything?

So yeah.. if anyone wouldn't mind, I'd like some tips on where to start with mining config and coins to try.

A 290 will mine anything you point it at but the problem is that because it uses so much power it is not the most profitable, but it out hashes my 970s, 1060s, 570s, and 480s.

Unless of course you get lucky with random alt coins like I did before, it doesn't matter that it's a bit inefficient when you're selling at massive bubbles.
But you gotta get lucky ofc.

Anyhow, do you know where I should start with determining what miner and settings to use? I forgot all the commands for cgminer and whatnot.
I also used reaper back then.. gave me better hashrate than cgminer, but I see no mention of it.

I think it's fair to say you're late to the party, unfortunately.
The altcoin bubble was well inflated in July this year but now it feels like all what's left is air.
BTC is still flying, and so are ICOs. Altcoin mining still does make some money but don't expect miracles. Have a look at whattomine or www.crypto-coinz.net for an idea of what your gear can produce.

I'm seeing a lot of announcements for new altcoins etc. Do they not rise and fall anymore like they used to? Bubbles etc.

First you need to decide what to mine.  The web site whatomine.com is a good place to start.  Input your estimated hash rates for your 290 and the it will tell you a good coin to mine.  Then go out and get the appropriate Miner software for that coin/algo.  Then find a pool that supports that coin, sign up or look at their help pages.  Setup your .bat file and start mining.

My main question is how do I set up the actual miner? How do I know what my estimated hashrate is?

Download the Nicehash miner legacy version and run the benchmark. That will give you a good idea of your rigs hash rate for various algorithms and you can use that to calculate your profitability on whattomine.com

Mine ETH at 31MH/s with your R9 290, you will make like $1.50/day or so.

He is late, but its a card that he already had so 1.00 a day for an old card you had sitting around isn't bad.  Its better than all these newbies asking how to set up a brand new rig, chasing the dragon....

Yeah, it's really funny. I posted somewhere about my experiences from a few years ago and how I ended up with a few btc after mining alts, and newbs immediately rush to ask "how do I mine bitcoins? this sounds good", lmao.

So r9 290 isn't even on whattomine.com, and any ethereum guide I try to check has the miner link 404.
This is getting a bit ridiculous.

EDIT: I tried mining on minergate, seems extremely simplified but it works. I only get 12mh/s with eth mining though, on an r9 290 which makes no sense. I tried 2-4 intensity and the mh/s stays the same. I'm guessing the automated settings are really bad?

If your GPU runs like crap, use the Stilt bios's from the litecoin days.

I did not use any alternative bioses back then, and I used cgminer and reaper. Can't recall my mining speed though.
I'll see how much I can get with claymore.

but a 1080ti and you are done, nvidia is very good with better density than amd, amd is stuck on ETH which is going to die, with nvidia you cna mine everything with more profit, also you are plug and ply no bios mod with nvidia

Really? How come they're so much better nowadays?

What about the new vega cards?
