Further rumors are surfacing that Amazon will announce a Bitcoin-related innovation Thursday, as a German newspaper fuels speculation.

In an article Tuesday, Die Welt reported that fintech sources in Silicon Valley were echoing previous hints from investor James Altucher that the global giant could soon integrate Bitcoin as a payment option.

Altucher made the comments in a report last month, citing Thursday’s conference call as a D-Day moment for Amazon and Bitcoin.

Ahead of the call, which anyone can listen to, momentum that the rumors actually hold substance are mounting.

“Even if the Oct. 26 date is not set in stone, Bitcoin introduction should probably be expected soon,” Die Welt writes.

Upon questioning Amazon, a spokesman replied to the publication in a predictably generic fashion.

“(Amazon) opts to include new products or services only when these are useful for our customers - until that point, we do not engage in rough speculation.”

The company has faced years of lobbying and rumors of various descriptions regarding its Bitcoin relationship since competitor Overstock became a pioneering virtual currency adherent in 2013.

While multiple other midsize operators have since engaged with Bitcoin, Amazon’s participation would still be a first-of-its-kind move.

Several dedicated services already exist to offer purchases with Bitcoin from their websites through the intermediary of gift cards.

well, we are already on that day D and I still have not seen any positive news and when I say positive news I mean Amazon accept bitcoin as a means of payment. so for now this is just an unpleasant rumor

“(Amazon) opts to include new products or services only when these are useful for our customers - until that point, we do not engage in rough speculation.”

I do not understand why he did not immediately answer the damn question that was asked instead of going around and in the end he answers meaningless things and lets the rumors remain

Well, #flibbrMarketplace on Reddit made a very valid argument, saying "Amazon handles 426 items purchased per second

and Bitcoin can handle 3 transactions per second now" ..so this will not work now. The counter argument is, not all of those

purchases will be done with Bitcoin and the Lightning Network and Side channels will handle that kind of load.  Grin

Oh yeah today is the D day however, we still doesn't get any clear answers from them. So for me its still a rumor and nothing else. Although it looks like this is a welcoming news as the price has already zoomed once more and closing it to $6000. I think the answer they gave is just generic and we can even extract something from it. They are still weighing options to really accept bitcoin payment or not. Or maybe waiting for the segwit2x fork before coming up with a clear announcement. I hope they really favor bitcoin as mode of payment and I'm sure its a win-win situation for them and for us bitcoin enthusiast.

Atleast in my country it wont be allowed because still govt stands unclear on cypto currency. they may either legalize or ban it but that is still under discussion. So till then govt does not give a nod at least even if Amazon starts accepting but it will be for specific countries only and not worldwide.

People for once should understand that if Amazon is ever going to allow people to pay with Bitcoin, that they themselves have to announce that. These kind of articles are only taken seriously by noobs, but these noobs happen to account for a large number of the people here, and thus their reach is also large. It's basically the same with how the first rumors about Amazon came online -- noobs were literally infecting each other with how great and awesome it was to have Amazon accept Bitcoin, while in reality, it was nothing more than a cheap "prank" (i.e. the news was nonexistent).

I always felt that this wouldn't be happening anytime soon but for some reason I keep seeing these rumors put up everywhere. In all honesty I still think it's still too early to have bitcoin as a proper payment method. But with lightning network coming up it might be practically possible in 6 months to a year. As you've pointed out bitcoin can handly only 3 transactions per second (source?) and amazon alledgedly can doe 400+. But only a tiny fraction would be bitcoin payments. I don't really mind amazon accepting bitcoin now, you can always use a service like Purse if you really need to buy something on amazon using bitcoin.

They must have a purpose in feeding us those rumors. I was very positive about it the first time I heard about it, and it was like 2 years ago or something like that. Then I was positive again hearing new rumors a month ago and they were denied again by Amazon. Now I'm skeptical. It's going to be great and I'm going to buy some stuff for sure, since I've been using Amazon anyway from time to time and I have some coins to spend, but I'm not going to get excited until I see it confirmed.

There as so so many talks about Amozon and it's decision about accepting payments in Bitcoin and I really don't know what to think. The last thing that I heard about is that Amazon has officially refused all the talks that they plan to accept Bitcoin or other crypto-currencies.

If amazon accepts bitcoin, that would be a real big game changer to the current monetary system but i can't see it happening anytime soon with the volatility of bitcoin's value on a day to day basis.  Maybe if it became more stable, but it'll be a while before that happens --if it ever does.

Amazon accepting bitcoin would be disruptive further driving price of bitcoin up perhaps to even greater than 24K.

Amazon jumping onto the Bitcoin train would be a huge development in mass adoption of cryptocurrencies. If amazon can find a way of addressing the price variability, other traders will eventually follow suit. We all know what mass adoption means for the price then.

On the other hand, I don't believe it until I read an official statement from amazon
