you need to pick software that runs amd and nvidia  or 1 for the nvidia and 1 for the amd.

This. Better stick with team red or green in one rig. If you start mixing cross manufactures you just create more possible error sources. I had 1050 Ti, 1060 and 1070 in one rig and it was working like a charm.

Yes and that is pretty  easy

The obvious answer for this is yes. In order for two GPU's or different GPU's to work out in mining, you should use a mining software that is compatible to your GPU brand.

For example, if you have an AMD then download a miner that is compatible with AMD, same with NVIDIA. But its much better to focus only on one GPU brand as there are brands that is much better to mine for a specific coin although the difference margin is not that really wide.

I have 3x 1070, 3x 570. Works like a charm. Can run them all on Claymore dual eth miner, or use seperate software.

Currently i'm mining Hush with the 1070s, and ethereum with rx570s.

I saw a random post once that implied the GPU number limit in windows is per brand/architecture, as in you could theoretically run twice the max number of physical cards as long as half are AMD and the other half Nvidia. True or false?

With the new windows 10 build update 1709, the restrictions to the number of GPUs in the system have been removed. Simply, this means you can now add an unlimited number of GPUs as long as your motherboard can support it.

I currently run a 10-GPU mining rig with both AMD and NVIDIA cards on them. Just make sure you download the right drivers for each and install one (1) card at a time.

yes but you need to config your machines. by the way I'm also doing 3 rx580 with 3 rx470 in a same machine

you can combine any kind of gpu in a system, you can use claymore to run only one instance of it
