I see blocks are still being mined albeit rather slowly on the BCH blockchain. Does anyone know why it's being mined at all seeing as it's much less profitable than BTC atm? Is it the BCH hardcore supporters determined to keep it going in the hope it will make them money long term?

Yes. They are bound and determined to bend miners to their will to keep their pump-n-dump altcoin alive.
