Can Altcoins defeat Bitcoin or do they depend on each other?

Dont know if there is any similar thread, but can Altcoin get better than Bitcoin, or will Altcoin alway be depending on Bitcoins growth?

I read that there are good alternates for Bitcoin and that Bitcoin is getting outdated. If Bitcoin disappear one day, will Altcoins survive?

Short term, altcoins need bitcoin to grow, bitcoin is the flag ship for cryptos and is the coin that attracts all of the new investment, longer term once more and more people become aware of cryptos then we may start to see a turning in the tide and bitcoin may not be the powerhouse it once was, however by this point many alts will hopefully be established in society and can thrive alone.
