I found a wallet.dat file in my documents folder. I'm sure it's mine, but I don't know why I put it there, and I have no idea which currency it's for. I've used several over the years, and these coins are most likely sitting in my wallet right now already. But I'd like to figure out which currency they are from, without downloading wallets and syncing blockchains from everything I've ever tried. Any ideas?

Could be bitcoin or lightcoin.
You dont have to dowload all chain, just install btc core and export private keys and addresses. Then try to learn more about addresses via blockchain.info. If you have some coins you will see them

The best advice I can give you is to look through it with a hex editor or some hex dump program and see if you can spot any addresses in it. Then it shouldn't be to hard to determine what cryptocurrency it is based on the format of the address.
