No Confirmations (Sent ahead of confirmed transfer to me)

I transferred an amount to myself from a mining site, then attempted to transfer out of my wallet before confirmations had taken place(only had 2 or 3 and was unconfirmed still). I had to include a 0.0005 fee because of something or other (forgot what exactly). I put the fee at 0.001 and sent it out before my incoming transaction had completed all the confirmations. Now when the bitcoins were sent to me and confirmed, the other transaction I sent ahead of time hasnt had any confirmations in the past hour. Did I just lose bitcoin or does it take a long time for this time of thing to take action?
