Penn & Teller gaming

Quote
Morgan van Humbeck completed his shift in front of the television and passed out. Ten minutes later, his cell phone woke him. “Morgan, this is Teller,” said a small voice on the other end of the line. “Fuck off,” replied Morgan in disbelief. He hung up the phone and went back to sleep.

Quote
The drive from Tucson, Arizona, to Las Vegas, Nevada, takes approximately eight hours when travelling in a vehicle whose top speed is forty-five miles per hour. In Desert Bus, an unreleased video game from 1995 conceived by the American illusionists and entertainers Penn Jillette and Teller, players must complete that journey in real time. ... the vehicle constantly lists to the right, so players cannot take their hands off the virtual wheel; swerving from the road will cause the bus’s engine to stall, forcing the player to be towed back to the beginning. The game cannot be paused. The bus carries no virtual passengers to add human interest, and there is no traffic to negotiate. The only scenery is the odd sand-pocked rock or road sign. Players earn a single point for each eight-hour trip completed between the two cities, making a Desert Bus high score perhaps the most costly in gaming.

That's the worst they can come up with? A bus driving game? I'm finding most mainstream games so boring now I can't even be bothered pirating them, that's how bad they are.

Ha!  Actually, a lot of the New Yorker article is about some guys that do an annual charity event and have raised over $1 million in the 7 years they have done it.

figures - I'm at work and so don't check any youtube links.  bitcointalk.org is okay, but not youtube.com.

Ah, ok. It's 56 hours of video of the guys playing Desert Bus. Note that this is only a highlights reel too. One of two. But the other one is only 30 hours.

LIES! This is the best game ever made. I've spent probably a total of 15 hours playing this game. I tend to get bored after 3-4 hours though, so I never make it  Cry

Just because you aren't extreme enough to appreciate this game doesn't mean you have to talk badly about it.

Hey - don't shoot the messenger!  We're not so different from bus drivers.  I thought the whole idea is hilarious - only Penn & Teller can get away with this kind of thing though.  The idea of 1 point for completing the entire drive is a great touch.  It was designed from the ground up to be really bad and tweak Janet Reno's nose.  How can you not love it already?

I was just going to say, I SWEAR I remember reading about this game in EGM when I was a teenager. The review said something to the tune of "The only change in scenery is halfway through, when a single bug splats on the windshield".

I wanted that game so bad. Angry I didn't have a Sega CD though. (I think that's what it was on anyway.)

Sure. Why not? It's better than Forklift Driver or Road Construnction Vehicle Driver. If those got a sequel sure Bus Driver deserves one too.
